Wayne Norman Smith

    Wayne Norman Smith, age 79, of Campbellsville, passed away at 3:05 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Village of Lebanon Nursing Home.

    He was a native of Adair County, born on September 8, 1936 to the late Willis and Annice Grant Smith.

    He was a member of the Campbellsville Christian Church and 1954 graduate of Adair County High School. He received the first baseball scholarship awarded by Western Kentucky University and graduated from there in 1958. 

    He was a former school teacher having taught in Adair County where he also served as the Assistant Basketball Coach. Following teaching, he began a career as a basketball official and for twenty-four years he served in that position with the SEC and four other conferences in twenty-eight states and also served in the NCAA and NIT Tournaments. In 1969 he was a backup official for the Final Four.

    Preceding him in death was a daughter, Kelli E. Smith on January 12, 2015 and a sister, Barbara Jean Corbin.

    Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Hall Smith; a son, Shannon Smith and his wife, April of Campbellsville; four grandchildren, Alexa-Victoria Gutierrez, William Gutierrez, Chloe Smith and Lily Smith and a brother, Willard Smith and his wife, Sue of Campbellsville.

    A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 9th on Cemetery Hill ion Springfield with Rev. Michael O’Neil, pastor of the Campbellsville Baptist Church, officiating.

    Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.
