Lylia G. Atwood, age 70, of, Liberty, KY, passed away on Friday March 31st, 2023, at her residence. She was born October 22nd, 1952, in Casey Co. KY. She was the daughter of the late Curtis and Bernice Edwards Emerson.

Lylia was a retired teacher’s aid for the Casey County School System.

Survivors include: Her Spouse: Michael W. Atwood, Three Daughters: Stephanie Clements of Lexington, Leslie and (Ched) Crouse of Lexington and Hannah and (Troy) Wheeler of Liberty, Seven Grandchildren: McKenzi, Raven, Micah, Callie, Ethan, Khloe and Hadlee, One Great Grandchild: Charlie, One Sister: Nancy Hayes of Liberty and Two Brothers: Gary Emerson of Liberty and John Emerson of Booneville, KY.

Visitation will be held 5:00 P.M. till 8:00 P.M.  Sunday April 2nd, 2023, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday April 3rd, 2023, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Dwight Coffman officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Baptist Cemetery.

Martha L. (Rakes) McFarland of Liberty passed from this life on Friday, March 31, 2023 at her residence. Born in Marion County, KY on September 15, 1954 to the late Dennis and Nellie (Garrett) Rakes, she was 68 years of age. She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a wife, mother, and grandmother, and was known as an encouragement to her family.

   Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a husband: Jeffrey McFarland; two sons: James Mason, Sr. and Jimmy Mason; and seven siblings: Carolyn Roller, Linda Hicks, Richard Rakes, George Rakes, Gene Rakes, Randy Rakes, and Helena Rafferty.

   She leaves to cherish her memory:
   Six grandchildren: James Mason, Jr., and wife Kimberly, Levi Mason, Landon Crews and companion Kassidy, Dalton Robertson, Autumn Wooley and companion Bryson, and Gabby Riggs and husband Clayton,

   And a host of extended family members and friends.

   There will be a funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. McFarland on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home, 1765 New Columbia Rd, Campbellsville, KY. President Kevin Foley will officiate. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Whited Cemetery in Casey County.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 11:00 AM until time for the service.

Virgil Thomas “V.T.” Altman of Green County, Kentucky, son of the late Leon Altman and Edna Noe Altman, was born on Tuesday, January 6, 1931 in Green County and departed this life on Friday, March 31, 2023 at his home. He was 92 years, 2 months, and 25 days of age.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ, was a member of Taylors Chapel Church. Mr. Altman was a farmer, a Korean war veteran having served in the United States Army, and was a member of the American Legion Rod Lowe Post #124.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Euna Mathis Hall Altman on February 8, 1999 having united in marriage on May 10, 1951.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law: Gregory and Sonda Altman, Ricky Altman all of Green County; two grandchildren: Brandy and Jason Tucker of Summersville, Megan and JR Curry of Gabe; three great-grandchildren: Jake Tucker and his fiancé, BayLee Allen of Summersville, Griffin Fields, and Owen Curry both of Gabe; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Ray and Marilyn Altman of Campbellsville, Robbie and Elaine Altman of Louisville; a brother-in-law; Ray Hall of Campbellsville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Altman was also preceded in death by a grandson: Payton Altman on August 31, 2015; two sisters: Lib Altman and Sybil Milby; a brother Joseph Altman.

The funeral services for Virgil Thomas “V.T.” Altman will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Central Time, Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Bennett Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Marian County Veterans Honor  Guard. Bro. Mark Price and Bro. Lamoine Pridey officiating.

Iva Rose Gilpin Wilkerson Burton, 86, of Campbellsville, KY passed away Friday, March 31, 2023, at her residence with her family by her side. She was born in Casey County, KY to the late Walter E. and Nany Jane Roy Gilpin.

Mrs. Burton was a member of the Saloma Baptist Church in Campbellsville, KY. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University with a degree in Early Childhood Development and was a retired social worker through the Lake Cumberland Community Service Program and The Headstart Program. She also attended Lindsey Wilson College. For many years, she owned and operated, Burton’s Nursey in Campbellsville, KY with her husband, Leon Burton. She also volunteered at Taylor Regional Hospital as part of the Women’s Auxiliary. Her hobbies included growing flowers and playing scrabble.

Survivors include her husband Leon Burton of Campbellsville; five children Rena McCloud of Lexington, KY, Ken Wilkerson (Lynda), Terry Wilkerson (Janet), Jeff Wilkerson, and Lyndon Wilkerson (Carol) all of Columbia, KY; seven grandchildren, Craig McCloud (Karen), Carson McCloud (Rebecca), Rob Wilkerson (Stephanie), Tara Mikchael Wilkerson, Tressie Roy (Ricky), Logan Wilkerson (BJ), and Shane Wilkerson; seventeen great grandchildren, Makayla McCloud, Madison McCloud, Zach Cooley, Maggie McCloud, Collyn McCloud, John Calum McCloud, James Warren McCloud, Thomas Hugh McCloud, Jordan Knifley, Dillon Wilkerson, Crystal Vertrees, D J Vertrees, Brayden Burton, Caydence Burton, Kassi Huddleston, Riley Roy, and Phillip Logan Wilkerson; three great-great grandchildren Bennett McGaha, Ava Alfaro, and Rhett McCloud.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the father of her children, Charles Willard Wilkerson; daughter-in-law, Julie Wilkerson; grandson, Sean Aaron Wilkerson; great grandson Jansen Reeves Wilkerson and ten siblings, her twin Ira Joe, Gerald P., Roy Randall, Ralph, Glenn, Chester B., and Thomas Lee Gilpin, Beryl Anderson, Iola Pearl Atwood, and Mary Faye Pendleton.

Funeral services will be Wednesday April 5, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Casey County. Visitation will be Tuesday April 4, 2023 from 4-8 p.m. at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Cecil Barkley Coffey of the Little Barren Community, son of the late John Daniel Coffey and Virgie Bagby Coffey, was born on Thursday, June 10, 1939 in Green County and departed this life on Friday, March 31, 2023 at his home. He was 83 years, 9 months, and 21 days of age.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was member of the New Hope Baptist Church. He worked in the oilfield for 21 years and then retired from Green County Schools after 26 years as a Bus Driver, he also was a farmer for many years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Joyce Jeffries Coffey on January 28, 2022 having united in marriage on February 12, 1972.

Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Tina and Glenn Wisdom of the Little Barren Community; a son: David Brian Coffey of the Little Barren Community; a granddaughter: Cecily Wisdom of the Little Barren Community; two sisters: Margaret Houk and Louise Perry both of Greensburg; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Coffey was also preceded in death by four brothers: Richard Coffey, Glen Coffey, Gene Coffey, and Tom Coffey.

The funeral services for Cecil Barkley Coffey will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Central Time, Monday, April 3, 2023 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Little Barren Cemetery. Bro. Meryl Young officiating.

Angel Lester, of Liberty, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2023, in Lexington, KY. She was 46.

Born May 6, 1976, in Gainesville, FL, she was a daughter of Larry Lester and Helen Thompson Tucker, both of whom survive. Angel was a fun outgoing person, that would do anything for anyone she knew. She loved being outdoors and her dogs, Mutsy and Blue. Angel was an assistant manager for Pizza Hut in Liberty.

Survivors include her son, Johnathon Blakey of Fallon, NV; daughter, Shelby Blakey of Somerville, MA; sister, Lisa (Landon) Andrews of Liberty; brother, Keith Lester of Liberty; significant other, Jackie Miller of Liberty; nieces, Kelsey (Josh) Foley and Chloe Andrews; and nephew, Cameron Horsman.

Barry C. Ellison, 73, of Casey County, Kentucky, left this life to go home on March 29, 2023. Born November 27, 1949, Barry was the son of Clarence Ellison and Alma Rayburn Ellison of Yosemite, KY.

Just like his father, Clarence (Sarge,) Barry was a Veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Vietnam War Era as a Military Policeman. 

Barry was a kind soul with a caring heart and a grand appreciation for others. He was a member of the Middleburg Baptist Church and spent many years at the Hustonville Baptist Church until he could no longer attend. He had a beautiful singing voice and was often heard singing or whistling throughout life. He had a special love for music, cars, and racing. He had strong integrity but could be bought with sweets. A good chocolate or pecan pie would disappear in minutes with him.

Barry was a Firefighter and loved helping others. He and a handful of his friends established the East Casey County Volunteer Fire Department in Middleburg, KY, where he served as Fire Chief for 12 years. He was Casey County Assistant EM for several years. As a young man, Barry worked the milk delivery route before becoming a dedicated Maintenance Mechanic at ATR in Danville, KY, where he retired.
  
From the young age of 32, Barry struggled with Parkinson’s Like Syndrome. Even in the hardest of times when he could not make his body do what he needed, he had a smile that carried warmth and would light up a room. In all the years, he never offered complaint to his circumstances nor to what he could or could not do. He purposefully gave 120% all day every day from the beginning of his journey.

Barry is remembered by his family for working on something and singing to the radio or snickering while telling tales about days gone by and most of all, for the love he showed for his wife, Brenda, and his family. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments in life, of which he was known to brag to others about quite often.

He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Brenda Grider Ellison; and his children, Nick Ellison (Starla), Andrea Clements (Dwayne) and James Ellison (Laura). Barry was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, all boys. His grandchildren, Allison, Cody, Johnie, Shelbie, Clyde Jr., Harley and Haleigh; and 4 great grandsons, Roman, Camden, Declan and Colton. Barry also leaves behind 2 sisters, Portia Phelps (Tommy) and Debbie Yates; one brother, Clarence Ellison, Jr (Angie); 4 nieces, Stephanie Dykes, Jyn Yates, Caroline Dixon and Beth Long (Larry); and a special aid, Alec Chappel.

Barry is preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Madeleine DeShea Brockman. 

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Maupin officiating. Burial will follow in Fair Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Casey County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, March 31, 2023, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.
