Ward Forrest Correll, 88, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Ward was born on January 7, 1928, to the late Charlie and Clora Hammond Correll.

He is survived by six children, Rebekah (Everett) Taylor of Lexington; Kirk Correll of Somerset, Jess (Angela) Correll of Stanford, Susan Correll of Somerset, Christa Correll of Somerset and Melinda Correll of Somerset; two brothers, Blaine Correll and Richard Correll of Somerset; a sister, Mildred Correll Brainard of Somerset; nine grandchildren, Amber Taylor Jackson (Steve), Tyler (Elizabeth) Correll, Hunter Correll, Adrienne Correll, Preston (Rachel) Correll, Leigh Correll, Winston Correll, Victor Correll and Zach Correll; eight great-grandchildren, Blake and Kyle Jackson, Emma Miller, Maxwell Correll, Francis and Roman Martin, Gus and Annie Correll; and a special friend, Brenda Flynn.

Ward was preceded in death by his wife, Regina Tarter Correll on June 7, 2008; a son, Vincent Correll and his wife Gwen Correll Badalato; five brothers, Ray Correll, James Correll, Estes Correll, Wendell Correll, William Wayne Correll; four sisters, Beulah Correll Farley, Charlcie Correll Carlson, Carol Correll, Kaye Correll Lautieri; two grandsons, Matthew Taylor and Simon Correll.

Ward Correll was born in Wayne County, Kentucky and grew up on the Oak Hill Road family farm in Somerset. He was one of 13 children. As a senior in high school, his bull won the 4-H Reserve Champion earning him a trip to Chicago, which he often said was a turning point in his life.

After high school, Ward left home with $2.67 in his pocket and thumbed a ride to Detroit where a brother and two sisters lived. He worked several jobs, attended the growing Temple Baptist Church with his siblings, and after several months of saving money, returned home with greater confidence. This was the beginning of his business success, which later included real estate development, Cumberland Lake Shell, holdings in UTG life insurance company, and was a founder of First Southern National Bank.

He fell in love with Regina Tarter of Nancy, Kentucky, but before they could pursue plans to marry, Ward was drafted into the Army on November 3, 1950. After service in South Korea, he returned home with deeper faith in God. He rekindled his romance with Regina Tarter and married her on March 27, 1953.

They had seven children and spent most of their married life on Oak Hill Road in Somerset and were members of First Baptist Church. Ward enjoyed giving money away as much as he enjoyed making it. His favorite past times were rook and croquet.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 25 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Somerset.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Somerset with Dr. French Harmon officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family requests expressions of sympathy to First Baptist Church of Somerset, Somerset Christian School, or to the ALS Association.

Lake Cumberland Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Ward Correll.
