She had made a profession of faith at an early age and was a member of the Ladies Chapel United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, along with other duties, and had also served as church treasurer for 25 years. She had taught school for 37 years for the Green County School System. In the early years she taught at the one-room schools at Ward Ridge, Terrill Jones, Fancy Ridge and Pleasant Valley, then at Greensburg. She was a member of the Green County Retired Teachers and Kentucky Retired Teachers. She was also a Kentucky Colonel. Mrs. Gardner was a devoted and loving wife and mother.
Survived by her husband of 69 years, Clarence Hayes “Todd” Gardner of Greensburg having united in marriage on May 13, 1953 in Summersville.
Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Teresa and Bobby Wade of Indiana; a daughter-in-law: Diana Tucker and her husband, Lanny of Greensburg; a grandson: Benjamin Tucker; a sister and brother-in-law: Judith and Jerry Resch of Florida; sister-in-law: Sarah Hodges of Greensburg; nieces and nephews: Susan Shaw, David Hodges, Danny Hodges, Garnetta Bale, Steve Gardner, Jeremy Resch, Beth Hodges, Baeda Grimsley, Brandie Shelton, and Brad Hodges; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son: Barry Neal Gardner on October 8, 1981; two sisters and three brothers: Marjorie Bale and Virginia May Hodges, Howard Hodges, Jr., Kenneth Ray Hodges, and William Olen Hodges; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Rollin and Zelma Gardner, Juanita Hodges, and Hulet Bale.
The funeral services for Mary Jean Gardner will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Central Time, Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Ladies Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Garnett Wayne Davis officiating.
Visitation is requested after 10:00 A.M., Central Time, Tuesday at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home until time of the funeral service.
