JD was a 1961 graduate of Rosenwald High School. He was a young man who earned a college scholarship in both basketball and football, yet he put his family needs ahead and chose to forgo college. He went to work at General Electric Appliances, where he remained for 36 years.
He was a relentless advocate for his community, a dedicated colleague, and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, caring uncle, cousin, and friend to all.
He was a faithful member of Saint Augustine Catholic Church and was a leader of the “JD Bell Bible Study Group” at the Marion County Correctional Facility for many years. He will be remembered for his untiring efforts in numerous community initiatives. He served on the City Council, offering time and talent. He was also a long-time member of the Golden Link #155 Prince Hall Lodge and he served as Secretary for a number of years.
He was lifelong big U of L Cardinal fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He touched many with his jokes, laughter, and his infectious personality full of a big smile and joy. He was truly loved, and his family and friends were delighted to share time with him.
Welcoming JD into eternity are his precious parents, Reverend and Mrs. George W. Bell. Siblings: Henry Bell, George Bell, Charles Bell. Alma Smith, Robert Bell, Verda Calhoun, and Ella Porter. Also, son-in-law, Michael Glass, Sr., grandson, Michael Glass II and a host of other family members and friends.
He leaves precious, unforgettable love and memories to daughters Marsha Weathers of Bardstown, Kentucky, and son-in-law David Weathers and Sylinda Glass of Louisville, Kentucky. Grandson, Justin Weathers and Granddaughter, Stephanie Weathers both of Louisville, Kentucky as well as a great grandson, Tre’ Glass of Louisville, Kentucky. In addition, a special brother, Thomas R. Bell of Kissimmee, Florida and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 16, 2023 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. – 10:45 A.M. on Saturday at Bosley Funeral Home.
