Born September 1, 1926 in Atterson, KY, he was the son of the late Theadore and Pearl Hicks Summers. Elmer worked on the railroad before joining the military. During his Army career, he was a helicopter instructor. He did two tours in Germany, fought in the Korean War, and two tours in Vietnam. He worked for the civil service at Fort Eustis after retiring from United States Army. He loved fishing and woodworking. Elmer was an avid handyman and was a former member of the Casey County Pork Producers Association.
Survivors include a son, Brian Keith Summers of Virginia; a daughter, Barbara (and Jim) Brennan of Newport News, Virginia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Buck Summers; two sons, Thomas Wayne and Jeffrey Alan Summers; seven brothers, William Eugene, Arlis, Wilbur, Roy, Kenneth, Earl, and Hobert Summers; and a sister, Ada Hayes.
Funeral service are 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 11, 2015 “Veterans Day” at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Hatchet officiating. Burial will follow at Whited Cemetery with military honors by the Casey County Honor Guard.
Visitation is Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until funeral service.
