Mendoza was operating a northbound 1998 Ford Van on Bloomfield Road at approximately 12:35 PM EDT when he disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of KY 150. Mendoza drove into the path of a westbound 2007 Chrysler Van operated by 76-year-old Cliddie McKinney, of Bardstown. McKinney's van then struck a 1998 Toyota Camry that was stopped in the southbound lane of KY 150 being operated by 43-year-old Debbie Spalding, of Springfield.
Mendoza and a passenger, 35-year-old Pascual Blanco, of Campbellsville, fled the scene but were apprehended by the Springfield Police Department and brought back to the scene before being taken to Springview Hospital and treated for minor injuries prior to arrest. Blanco was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Alcohol Intoxication. Both were lodged in the Marion County Detention Center.
Cliddie McKinney and a passenger, 78-year-old Mary McKinney, were taken to Springview Hospital where Cliddie McKinney died at approximately 2:57 PM EDT. Mary McKinney was treated and released. Debbie Spalding was also transported to Springview Hospital, treated and released. It is unknown if seatbelts were in use.
Tpr. Jason Warriner is investigating the collision and was assisted at the scene by additional Troopers from Post 15, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Fire, EMS, Emergency Management and the Springfield Police Department.
