Clinic Suspected of Illegally Selling Pills with Ties to Russell County Burned Thursday Morning

1/31/2020

A clinic long suspected of illegally selling prescription pills, and reportedly with ties to drug-trafficking organizations in Russell and neighboring counties, burned early yesterday morning.

According to reports, Dr. Bruce Coffey’s clinic, located in Oneida, Tennessee, just across the Kentucky and Tennessee border, was raided in the summer of 2018 as part of an investigation of whether Coffey was improperly prescribing pain pills and other drugs.

Coffey has not yet been charged according to reports, but police believe his clinic was a key supplier to drug traffickers in the southern part of Kentucky and Tennessee for years.   Federal officials did state they had identified drug trafficking organizations in Russell, Pulaski and McCreary counties that used Coffey’s clinic as the main source of prescription drugs they sold.   The clinic apparently closed two months ago.

Federal authorities said yesterday that the fire will not affect their ongoing investigation.

Former Russell County Sheriff’s Office Detective Joey Hoover alleges in a lawsuit that age discrimination was the reason he wasn’t hired by the Columbia Police Department.

Detective Hoover, who applied for a position in November 2018 when he was 52, alleges that he was informed he would be hired.

According to the lawsuit, three positions with the department were ultimately filled by individuals that were younger than Hoover.

The lawsuit was filed in Adair Circuit Court.

REMINDER — Claims made in civil lawsuits present only one side of the issue.

Man facing murder charge in Russell County arrested

A man facing a murder charge out of Russell County was arrested in Pulaski County early Monday morning, January 27th, 2020.

According to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, 40-year-old Billy Wilson was wanted on a murder charge in connection with a deadly crash involving three vehicles on the Louie B Nunn Parkway in May 2019.

According to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Wilson is accused of causing the death of Christopher Monnane, of Nashville, TN

The sheriff’s office says Wilson was only initially charged with DUI after the crash, so he was able to bond out of jail.

In November, after an investigation, they say his charge was upgraded to murder and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

An arrest citation from the Pulaski Co. Sheriff’s Office says Wilson was found Monday morning when deputies there responded to a burglary in progress.

Pulaski County deputies say they caught Wilson as he was trying to run away from the scene.

He was arrested and taken to the Pulaski Co. Detention Center where he is facing additional charges of fleeing police and resisting arrest.

Wilson is being held on $200,000 bond.
