Reps. Joe Fischer and Bart Rowland Pre-File Bill to Aid Kentucky Consumers and Protect Credit Information

9/28/2017

FRANKFORT, Ky. (September 27, 2017) – Representatives Joe Fischer, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Bart Rowland, Chairman of the House Banking and Insurance Committee, have pre-filed legislation aimed to allow Kentucky consumers to permanently freeze third-party access to their credit information, which is held by consumer reporting agencies, unless and until the consumer directs otherwise. Currently in Kentucky, consumers are only able to freeze third-party access to credit information for seven years.

“This bill will allow consumers to better protect confidential information promptly and permanently, in the event of a cyber-security attack against a consumer reporting agency,” said Rep. Fischer, R-Ft. Thomas.

The bill, BR 228, is a timely response to the massive Equifax breach, which has affected nearly 143 million Americans, including nearly 40 percent of Kentucky families.

“Considering the recent Equifax breach that affected so many consumers, the need for this change is evident to protect Kentuckians,” said Rep. Rowland, R-Tompkinsville. “If passed, Kentucky will be on-par with the rest of the country in terms of limiting third-party access to consumer credit information.”

Kentucky is among only a few remaining states who haven’t shifted to a permanent freeze on credit information, should a consumer choose so.

LWC Theatre program to present: The Importance of Being Earnest

PictureHope Poe of Paris, KY and Micah Stewart of Lexington, KY rehearse the upcoming show, The Importance of Being Earnest, which premieres Nov. 1, 2017 at 7 PM CT
COLUMBIA, KY – The Lindsey Wilson College Theatre Program will present the classic The Importance of Being Earnest November 1, 2, 3, & 5.

The play – which is directed by LWC Assistant Professor of Theatre, Robert Brock – will be performed at 7:00 p.m. CT Nov. 1, 2, 3 and at 2 p.m. CT Nov. 5. Tickets are $5 for general public, $3 for LWC faculty/staff, and free to LWC students.

The Importance of Being Earnest, easily Oscar Wilde’s most notable comedy, is about two friends, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff. The show’s action centers around the friends’ new identities that have been invented to court Cecily Cardew and Gwedolyn Fairfax. The question is, will these two bachelors’ “bunburying” get them the women of their dreams, or just bring trouble?

“Wilde called the show a trivial comedy for serious people,” Brock said. “It is, I think, one of the best comedies ever written.”

While the play itself is regarded as a classic piece of American theatre, it hits today’s audiences with hilarious comedy and wit.

“This play is filled with wit and puns and a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s a farcical romp around the idea of secret lives and people who have invented fictitious friends so they can go visit them a get away from their own lives.”

Brock ends by telling us that the show is just “delightfully funny” and that audiences “won’t be able to contain their laughter” from start to finish.

The Lindsey Wilson College Theatre Program will present The Importance of Being Earnest at 7:00 pm CT November 1, 2, 3 and 2pm CT November 5 in V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St. For tickets, contact Robert Brock atbrockr@lindsey.edu or (270) 590-4803.

Directed by LWC Assistant Professor of Theatre, Robert Brock with Thomas Alvey of Brownsville, KY. (Algernon Moncrieff), Micah Stewart-Wilcox of Lexington, KY. (Jack Worthing), JulieAnne Cox of Franklin, KY. (Lady Bracknell), Gretchen Miles of Columbia (Cecily Cardew), Hope Poe of Paris, KY. (Gwendolyn Fairfax), Rachael Miller of Corinth, KY. Speaker Jeff Hoover Leads Bipartisan Effort for Disaster Relief Fund; Donations Aid Hurricane Victims

FRANKFORT, Ky. (September 28, 2017) – The Kentucky House of Representatives, led by Speaker of the House Jeff Hoover, has organized a disaster relief fund to aid victims of the recent hurricanes, which have devastated parts of Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and more.   More than $4,700 has been raised and all proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.

“Millions of people have been adversely affected by these catastrophic storms,” said Speaker Jeff Hoover. “Victims have lost loved ones, homes, and personal belongings. Establishing a fund to help people rebuild their lives is one small way we can give back to those who are suffering due to these unprecedented natural disasters.”

In a recent letter, Speaker Hoover called on all House members, Republican and Democrat, to participate in the effort. Funds donated by House members will go toward providing disaster victims with food, shelter, supplies, and health services, as well as emotional support.

“Kentucky has a long and proud history of coming together to help those in need, so our members stand ready to add to that legacy as we join with others across the Commonwealth who are sacrificing their time, talents, and resources to getting these hurricane victims back on their feet,” said House Democratic Leader Rocky Adkins. “We’re committed to doing all we can to help.”

An average of 91 cents of every dollar donated to the American Red Cross is used to directly aid victims in recovery. The charity has already distributed 856,000 meals and snacks and nearly 100,000 personal items to hurricane victims.

“As more time passes, the urgency to donate tends to wane,” added Speaker Hoover. “There is much more work to be done and we hope our efforts remind others that a great need is still there for these storm victims.”
