KSP Offers Accelerated Training Academy For Current Law Enforcement Officers

Kentucky State Police has announced they are accepting applications for a Law Enforcement Accelerated Program (LEAP) class designed for current law enforcement officers aspiring to become state police troopers.
 
A unique aspect of this LEAP class is that graduates will be guaranteed to work in their home post area upon completion of academy training. 
 
KSP’s fifth LEAP Class is scheduled to begin August of 2019 and will include a 12-week training academy.
 
Applicants must have two (2) years of service in Kentucky, completed their DOCJT training and graduated no later than May 1, 2017.
 
All application materials must be completed and returned to the KSP Recruitment Branch by November 16, 2018. Applications must include a recommendation from a state police trooper and a KSP post commander.

A deadly shooting occurred Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Russell County in the Key Village Shopping Center and a Russell Co. man is in jail in connection with the murder.  
 
42 year old Jason Clark of Jamestown, KY is in custody following the shooting of 32 year old Brandy Renee Johnson. The shooting occurred Saturday, October 27, 2018 just after 2pmCT in the parking lot of Coe’s Steakhouse in Russell Springs where Johnson was a waitress and was on her lunchbreak. Johnson had worked at Coe’s for 3 years.
 
The Russell Springs Police Department is investigating and WAVE News will have additional information as it is made available.

Columbia Police Department School Resource Officers make drug arrest.

On Wednesday 10-24-18  Ofc. Kevin Atwood and Ofc. Charles Greer who are assigned as SRO’ initiated a drug investigation on school campus. 

Officers received information from students that another student had been seen in possession of drugs.   After the investigation they was able to locate the student who was enrolled at Adair County Middle School.   Officers located a small amount of marijuana on the juvenile. Further investigation led them to obtain a search warrant for a residence aprox 9 miles east of Columbia on KY 206 .  Officers executed  the search warrant with assistance from CPD Ofc John Dial and his K-9 Gunner locating a large amount of marijuana  in plastic bags with digital scales. 
 

Arrested was 36 year old Tisha Cook of Columbia and she was lodged in Adair County Regional Jail.  

She was charged with: Trafficking in Marijuana over 8 ounces and Wanton Endangerment 2 counts. 

Officer Atwood and Officer Greer are continuing the investigation and was assisted by Ofc Dial and k-9 gunner.

Lindsey Wilson Football No. 17 in latest NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson football fell seven spots to No. 17 in the latest NAIA Football Coaches’ Top-25 Poll, NAIA officials announced on Monday.  

The Blue Raiders (5-3, 2-2 MSC) received 131 voting points from the panel of head coaches that make up the national rating committee. 

Four teams are featured in the poll without a loss this season, including the top three teams in the poll. 

Morningside (Iowa) holds on to the No. 1-ranking for the fifth consecutive week with 366 voting points and 15 first-place votes. Marian (Ind.) sits in second after earning the final first place vote and 352 total voting points. 

Mid-South Conference members Bethel (Tenn.) and Reinhardt (Ga.) come in at No. 3 and No. 4 in the poll, respectively. Bethel earned 330 voting points as Reinhardt racked up 327 points. 

In total five MSC teams are featured in this week’s top 25 poll. Cumberlands (Ky.) comes in at No. 13 in the poll after earning 199 points while Georgetown (Ky.) is the final MSC team in the poll as they sit at No. 19 in the poll.

Ave Maria (Fla.) is featured in the receiving votes section with 18 voting points, but failed to crack the top-25. 
​
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 3, as the Blue Raiders travel to Campbellsville, Kentucky to take on the Tigers at Finley Stadium.

Local Business was total loss due to fire

The Columbia Fire Department was called to a commercial building fire on Monday night at 11:08 PM to 411 Burkesville Street to Sign America upon arrival the building was totally engulfed in fire.  The origin of the fire is unknown and there were 17 firemen on the scene for 4.5 hours.  The building was a total loss.  ​

Mid-South Football Weekly Report

There are nine Mid-South contests on tap this week as 18 MSC teams are in action.

Action begins on Saturday afternoon with MSC Divisional action.

No. 14 Cumberlands (Ky.) hosts St. Andrews (N.C.) and Campbellsville (Ky.) visits No. 20 Georgetown (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. ET.

In a pair of 1:30 p.m. ET starts, Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) plays Kentucky Christian at home and Webber International (Fla.) visits Warner (Fla.). All four teams are vying for its first MSC Divisional win of the year.

The final 1:30 p.m. ET kickoff features a pair of unbeaten teams in the MSC Appalachian Division. No. 3 Reinhardt (Ga.) hosts Pikeville (Ky.) with first-place in the division at stake.

At 2:30 p.m. ET, No. 5 Bethel (Tenn.) travels to Columbia, Kentucky to face off against No. 10 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the only ranked matchup in the Mid-South.

Bethel is looking to go 4-0 against ranked opponents in a game that features the top two scoring offenses in the Mid-South.

At 6 p.m. ET, Union (Ky.) hosts Bluefield (Va.) in MSC Appalachian play.

A pair of MSC Sun Division contests rounds out week 10. Southeastern (Fla.) returns from a bye to host Edward Waters (Fla.) and No. 25 Keiser (Fla.) travels to Ave Maria (Fla.). The Seahawks and Gyrenes are undefeated in divisional play. 

Last week, 18 teams from the Mid-South Conference were in action.

Faulkner scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to race past Webber International, 31-14 last Friday night.

Keiser pitched a second-half shutout to beat Warner, 27-17. DeAndre Henderson led the way for the defense with eight tackles and provided the winning score with an interception return for a score in the second quarter.

Bethel routed its second straight opponent, racing past Cincinnati Christian 70-14.

Cumberland upset previous No. 4 Lindsey Wilson, 24-21 last week. The Phoenix limited the Blue Raiders to 284 yards of offense in the game, 224 yards below its season average.

Point's Zach Cupps scored on a six-yard touchdown run with five seconds left to give the Skyhawks a 21-17 win over St. Andrews.

Georgetown amassed 598 yards of offense in its 50-35 win over Kentucky Christian.

Ave Maria remained undefeated in the MSC Sun Division with a 41-14 win over Edward Waters. The Gyrenes scored 41 unanswered points and held a 40-20 advantage in time of possession.

Pikeville raced past Union, 54-21. Bowen Smith accounted for 159 yards of total offense and four touchdowns on his way to winning MSC Appalachian Offensive Player of the Week.

To round out week nine, Cumberlands beat Bluefield 50-17. The Patriots outgained the Rams 243-50 on the ground on its way to the win.

The latest regular season Coaches poll was released on Monday and six MSC teams are ranked heading into the week -- Reinhardt (3rd), Bethel (5th), Lindsey Wilson (10th), Cumberlands (14th), Georgetown (20th) and Keiser (25th).
