The effort began with Sammy Hughes and Rodney White and their desire to see this former Rosenwald School building preserved for future generations. Mr. Hughes, who is a teacher in the Adair County School system, was a student at Flat Woods and, therefore, has a special interest. Mr. White has studied the Rosenwald buildings and sees a need to preserve one of the best examples in Kentucky and one of the best in the nation, and the only one left in Adair County.
Saturday, September 21st has been designated as a community work day and the Flat Woods School is one of the most important spots for the action to take place. The Columbia Christian Church’s Band of Brothers organization is spear heading the work on the building that day.
On that Saturday, volunteers will assemble at the school with work beginning at 7 a.m. central time, and will continue until the work is finished, with a mid-day meal furnished.
The Band of Brothers will orchestrate the work and all volunteers are asked to come prepared to jump right in. Cleaning supplies are needed, including but not limited to cleaner, rags, etc.
If you can, come out that day. Donation of materials will be greatly appreciated as well as monetary donations.
Bobby Morrison, of the Band of Brothers, says: "All people are invited to come, come one—come all."
