Officer Daniel Ellis' family and fellow officers from the Richmond Police Department sat in the courtroom as the four people connected to his death appeared before the judge.
Madison County prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty against Raleigh Sizemore and Gregory Ratliff.
Sizemore is charged with murder. Ratliff is charged with complicity to murder.
Police said Ratliff lied to Ellis and told him no one was inside the home at the center of an attempted robbery investigation.
Ratliff led Ellis into a room where Sizemore was waiting, police said.
Police said Sizemore shot Ellis in the head. He died less than 48 hours later.
Two other suspects, Carl Banks and Rita Creech, face robbery charges in connection with the initial crime that led Ellis to the home.
Attorneys for all four defendants entered not guilty pleas on behalf of their clients.
Lawyers for Creech and Banks asked the judge to reduce their bonds.
Creech's bond is set at $10,000. Banks’s bond is $100,000.
The judge declined that request.
"It would be a danger to the community and a danger to yourself if you were released to any other bond," Judge William Clouse said.
The judge said he would like to keep all four cases together, but said that may not be possible moving forward.
A status hearing is scheduled for February.
