The Blue Raiders defeated visiting Wilberforce (Ohio) 76-52 to improve to 15-6 on the season.
Wethington -- now in his 30th season as the head coach on the Lindsey Wilson sideline -- is the program’s all-time leader in wins and ranks third among the active coaches in the NAIA. He owns a .638 winning percentage with 25 winning seasons, including 17 20-win seasons.
“All of these wins are a product of a supportive administration and great student-athletes and assistant coaches over the years,” Wethington said. “I’m so proud of them and what they have meant to this program over the last 30 years.”
Over the last five seasons, Wethington’s Blue Raiders boast a 122-34 record, a conference championship and three NAIA National Tournament appearances. In 2016-17, Lindsey Wilson set a single-season program record with 32 wins.
Wethington owns a career record of 600-341, all games coming at Lindsey Wilson.
“I want to congratulate John on this amazing accomplishment and thank him for his commitment to Lindsey Wilson College,” LWC athletics director Willis Pooler said. “I know he understands and is grateful to the outstanding student-athletes and assistant coaches that have helped him reach this incredible milestone.”
During his time at Lindsey Wilson, Wethington has recruited and coached 18 NAIA All-Americans or honorable-mention all-Americans. Since Lindsey Wilson joined the Mid-South Conference in 2000-01, Wethington has coached five conference players of the year, three conference freshmen of the year, and 33 all-MSC performers. Off the court, Wethington’s teams have been named an NAIA Scholar Team 10 times, while boasting 24 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 77 Academic All MSC performers.
“I’m so appreciative of (former LWC president) Dr. John Begley for hiring a 23-year to lead this program and for the continued support of (current LWC president) Dr. Bill Luckey, Dean Adams, and Willis Pooler,” Wethington said. “Now it's time to get back to work and concentrate on Georgetown (Ky.).”
The Blue Raiders host Georgetown at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday.
