Adair County Primary Center and Adair County Elementary School students were treated Friday to a speech from Miss Kentucky Laura Jones about the importance of staying away from drugs and making healthy decisions. Jones’ appearance was the culmination of the district-wide Red Ribbon Week, an anti-drug program presented by the Family Resource Center and Youth Service Center.
“We are so honored to have Miss Kentucky, Laura Jones, here to speak to our students on drug, tobacco, and alcohol prevention,” says Paula Garrison, the Family Resource Center coordinator at ACPC. “The goal is to educate students on making good, healthy choices.”
Jones spoke at ACPC Friday morning before moving on to ACES midday. In addition to the lessons on drugs and alcohol, Jones also shared other healthy tips with the students, including proper nutrition and regular exercise. “How many people here like ice cream?” Jones asked the students at ACPC, as nearly every hand in the audience shot up in unison. “Me too,” she said, “but I know it has a lot of sugar in it, so I don’t eat it very often.”
Both Garrison and ACES Family Resource Center coordinator Debbie Cowan say the students were thrilled to have such a notable public figure come speak to them. “The students were so excited to have a visit from Miss Kentucky,” Cowan says. “The message was inspiring and she serves as a great role model for our students. We were so pleased to have her stop by the school.”
