Adair County Schools and Cumberland Family Medical Center, Inc. are pleased to offer a new system of expanded health care in our local schools for the 2015-2016 school year. Along with the regular school nurse program, the addition of a Family Nurse Practitioner will allow for a high level of care within the school setting. The Family Nurse Practitioner, Tiffany McMinoway, will be available during school hours on a rotational basis through our schools to provide preventative services such as well child exams and immunizations along with acute care visits. Parents will have the option of allowing their student to be seen at school in the Healthy Kids Clinic in an efforts to provide more complete and prompt care, reduce time out of class for appointments, and increase academic opportunity.
Robbie Harmon, Dean of Students for Adair County Schools says, “ The Healthy Kids Clinic will give our students and their parents one more option for student health care.” Harmon went on to say that “this partnership is exciting because it will help eliminate basic barriers for healthcare, such as missed work for parents, missed instructional time for students and transportation needs/costs for families.” There have been many questions about the Healthy Kids Clinics as they start up in our schools. Harmon explains that the day to day services that the school nurses provide for our students will look the same. The school nurses will provide day to day care such as administering daily prescribed medications, providing basic medication such as Tylenol, antacids and eyedrops, helping cuts and scrapes health with band-aids, taking temperatures, etc. Parents/guardians will not be billed in any way for the day to day services of the school health nurses. The big change comes if a student is seen to need a higher health care need such as fever or suspected illness that may need further treatment. At that time parents will be contacted much like in years past. Once the parent gets a call they will be given the option of seeing the Family Nurse Practitioner, Tiffany McMinoway, or coming to school and taking their child to their family health care provider. If a parent decides to allow Mrs. McMinoway to see their child Cumberland Family Medical will make arrangements for the Nurse Practitioner visit during the school day. Parents are always welcomed to be present at the visit and will always get a report. Ms. McMinoway will also be available to complete school and sports physical, immunizations, and well child exams. If a parent elects for their child to see the Family Nurse Practitioner insurance will be billed through Cumberland Family Medical. More Health Kids Clinic information and registration forms will be sent home with all children at the beginning of school. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 temporarily closed the intersection on May 27 for culvert pipe replacement beneath both routes (KY 55X and KY 206). Along with the new turn lanes, motorists will also see a new signal installed for traffic traveling southbound KY 55. The light, like the signal installed at the KY 55 and KY 80 intersection in Columbia two years ago, includes a flashing yellow arrow, which indicates that motorists are allowed to proceed with caution but must yield to oncoming traffic.
