Ilene B. Goodhue, age 88, formerly of Cumberland County, Kentucky, passed away  on Wednesday, April 08, 2015, in Jasper, Indiana.

Ilene was born in the Willis Creek area on February 9, 1927 to Jack and Florence (Dicken) Guinn. She married Johnny Goodhue on July 8, 1954 in Crossville, TN. They lived their life together in several different cities-Louisville, Nashville (TN), and Owensboro. Johnny preceded Ilene in death on April 2, 2000.

Ilene had two brothers preceding her in death, Raymond “Junior” Guinn, and Wendell Guinn. Both were residents of Cumberland County for the majority of their lives.

Also preceding Ilene in death besides her husband and brothers are one granddaughter, Jennifer Goodhue.

Survivors Include:
Two sons:
James Goodhue, and his wife, Heather, of Jasper Indiana
John Goodhue, and his wife, Mary, of Denver Colorado

Four Grandchildren:
Jace and Jack Goodhue, of Jasper, Indiana, and Caitlin and Skylar Goodhue, of Denver, Colorado

One Great Granddaughter:
Kya Goodhue, of Denver, Colorado

Ilene also has several cousins surviving in the Cumberland County area-Twila Anderson, Nancy Taylor, Wanda Branham, and Stevie Anderson.

Ilene loved country music and horse racing, and was a lifelong “straight-ticket” Democrat with a special love for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. She never tired of recalling her childhood on Willis Creek during the Depression-her father Jack working with the WPA to build Highway 90, walking up the ridge to Willis Creek school, listening in a yard with a dozen other people to Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe on the Grand Ol Opry broadcast, played on a battery-powered radio placed in a window, “dinners on the ground” at outdoor church revivals, and shoeboxes under childrens’ beds with simply a banana or apple, a stick of candy, and maybe a tiny toy for Christmas.

Ilene was a homemaker the entirety of her married life, but worked at the Burkesville cleaners as a young woman. Some might think of a homemaker like Ilene as not having many accomplishments to show for her life. She did not get past an eighth grade country school education, invent something to change people’s lives, write anything that will be remembered forever, or make important decisions in business or politics. Despite these truths, to suggest she did not make an impact would be foolish. As a mother, she instilled in her two sons the absolute certainty that they could do anything they wanted. She devoted her life to her family and believed education to be the most important thing in life. Both sons graduated from college, and both also earned post-graduate degrees-the older brother getting a law degree from UK, and the younger receiving a Masters in Music from the University of Illinois. By any standard, it is certain that her efforts as a mother were an investment that had a tremendous return, and that Ilene had plenty to show for her life. It is also certain that there are many dividends yet to be paid in her grandchildren, each convinced by her that they are the most important person in the world, and that they also can do anything they put their minds toward.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street, Burkesville, Kentucky.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the service time at 11:00 A.M.  Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.
