The L. “Doc” Cassidy Award is given for outstanding service and dedication to the association, of which Thomas was president in 2016. (Other Adair countians who served as president were Grover Gilpin in 1955, seven years after the association was formed; William Wilson in 1969, Joe Johnson in 1980 and Terry Harvey in 2007.)
Thomas has been active in the state association for many years.
Last year, Thomas won the second William L. Taylor Civic Service Award, named for the former Greensburg mayor, civic leader, fair chairman and 24-year association secretary who died just before the 2016 convention.
In his honor, the association created an annual award honoring “a hometown fair individual who is also recognized as a leader in other civic matters.” Al Cross, University of Kentucky Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues
