Adjourn OLDHAM COUNTY, Ky. --The last time residents had the chance to vote on whether Oldham County should be wet or dry was in 1987.
Oldham County residents will again have that opportunity again Tuesday. If the countywide wet vote fails, they'll have to wait another three years before the issue can be petitioned again. A yes vote on Dec. 29 would mean that packaged alcohol could be sold countywide. Oldham County resident Tom Cox said he's on the fence about the issue. He was in favor of the county becoming moist, but when that happened, he said the small-town feel changed. “The first thing that impressed me was number of signs in restaurant windows, flashing beer signs,” Cox said. “It was now something you would expect to see in Las Vegas.” Scott Whitehouse, chairman of the Oldham County Expanded Alcohol Sales Committee, is rallying for a yes vote. He said it would drive economic development. “We have a local business distillery that needs to be added to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail,” Whitehouse said. He said Oldham County has lost hotels and restaurants to Louisville because of the alcohol issue, and a yes vote could mean more money coming into the community. It costs the county between $85,000 and $90,000 to put on a countywide vote. By statute, officials had the choice of either Dec. 22 or Dec. 29 for the special election. They decided that turnout would likely be higher after Christmas. Voters are to report to their regular polling locations on Dec. 29. The polls will be open that day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Story courtesy of WLKY.com The Columbia City Council will meet in Regular Session this evening (Monday, Jan. 4) at 6:00 p.m. in City Hall.
